The End of Year Fic Meme
Jan. 12th, 2013 09:27 pmHere it is: the annual End of Year fic meme. With very little fic, but my new, shiny resolution is that if I have nothing to say, I will still say it. At some considerable length.
The Stories
Half-Term Saturday
A Story of Warnings and the Ignoring Thereof
Cocktail Time
Hunting the Unicorn
Humbug
The reasons there were just five of them
Mostly, it's because since about a year and a half, I have lots of work. And being self-employed, I take whatever work is coming my way. Fanfiction has to take second place for now. Another reason is modding
hoggywartyxmas, since the mod-posts take up quite a bit of time, too. But they’re such fun to write!
Some Stats
Pairing Stats:
40% femslash
20% het
40% gen
Nicked Titles Stats
40% Original titles (well, that’s ‘original’ strictly in the sense of ‘not nicked’)
60% Nicked titles, of which 1 from another book, 1 from a tapestry, and 1 from Dickens.
Self-Aggrandizement Stats
100% stories made it to the rec-letter
quibbler_report, and one was Editor's Pick! A very proud moment.
80% stories made it to hot recs
60% stories made it to
crack_broom
80% were nominated for
hpfanficfanpoll awards and I now have three neat banners on my userpage for this year.
Which means that this section ought to be called The Marvellousness of My Flist, for it's all thanks to your fabulous rec'cing, nominating, and voting. I really do have the best flist in the world!
Looking back, did you write more fics than you thought you would this year, less than you thought, or about what you predicted?
More or less what I predicted. The wonderful
hp_friendship fest was a bit of a surprise, but too good to be missed.
Where did you publish/archive your stories?
On Fanfiction.net, on Dreamwidth whenever I remember to back up there.
What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted in December 2010?
Most pairings come as surprises, but I never dreamt I would write a 10K Rita Skeeter & Gilderoy Lockhart story. Never thought I'd write Minerva/Narcissa either. Beware of prompt-based fests - the things one's flisties inspire. Amazing.
What’s your favourite story this year? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you the happiest.
Writing Hunting the Unicorn was great fun, once I had the plotline worked out. Good, old-fashioned, romantic femmeslash with one of my OTP's.
Okay, NOW your most popular story.
Cocktail Time without a doubt. I'd been prepared for fairly little response. How many people want to tackle 10K of Skeeter and Lockhart? Now, if it were a 2K story in a fest, they might read it, I reckoned, but 10K? Never.
And then I got lots of comments and recs all over the place. I still can't get over it.
Story most under-appreciated by the universe?
None. I have such a wonderful flist! They alone make the whole writing business satisfying, and there are many others who not only read but comment as well.
Story that could have been better?
All of them, of course. But I did write them to the best of my ability, and then considerably beyond that after the sterling work of my trusted betas *waves*.
Sexiest story?
Half-Term Saturday. It's the only story with a really outspoken sex-scene in the whole bunch. Two really outspoken sex-scenes, actually. Make that three if we include the youngsters at the French boarding school. All great fun to write, and it seems my readers enjoyed themselves, too.
Most fun story?
Getting in Rita's shoes was glorious fun, darlings. But I thoroughly enjoyed writing Severus Snape's view on A Christmas Carol in Prose, too.
Story with single sweetest moment?
A Story of Warnings and the Ignoring Thereof. Although Horace would object if I were to call it 'sweet'.
The story that made you cry?
I don't cry over my own stories. I'm too busy getting everything just so.
Hardest story to write?
A Story of Warnings .... I just couldn't get started at all, because I had an assignment with virtually nothing in terms of prompt, and a het-only clause where I had said I would so much prefer to write femslash. So there I was, on the verge of dropping out. A prompt mined from an old Hoggywarty signup saved the day, but I hated that story while I was working on it.
Easiest story to write?
Cocktail Time. Rita is just such fun, and I could be as gossipy as I wanted. Also, I had decided it would be a 'book' by Rita, so I could include all sorts of fun backstories and didn't have to worry about length.
Most overdue story?
I don't think I asked for more than a week extension on any story, and often less.
Did you take any writing risks this year? What did you learn from them?
I didn't really take risks. I write for pleasure, which means I only write things I actually find fun to write.
Do you have any fanfic goals for the New Year?
Alas, I can't do Dysfuncentine. Too much RL work in the coming weeks to make that a workable option. But I do consider Beholder. After that, I don't know, really. If there is a
minerva_fest, then that will be a definite, of course. And if
hp_friendship runs again, I'll join that, too.
Favourite summary:
From Half-Term Saturday: Summary: See prompt.
That's the kind of summary I'm best at. It's also the kind of story I'm best at, plot-challenged that I am.
Favorite opening line:
From Cocktail Time: Opening lines are hell.
Favorite closing line:
From Humbug: All the rest is humbug.
Which seems a fitting end for this bit of navel-gazing, too.

Date: 2013-01-12 09:03 pm (UTC)I'm so glad you didn't give up on A Story of Warnings and the Ignoring Thereof--I love that story. I feel your pain, as I always have a hard time writing to a prompt, even when I'm initially enthusiastic about it.
The mod-posts should count against fic-tallies, I think. They're little gems of characterization.

They're all triumphs, every single one of them.

Date: 2013-01-12 11:56 pm (UTC)All your stories were total winners this year, my dear, and you deserve every QR rec and award going. I'm not even going to try to pick a favorite; each one is a triumph of character and voice and wit. Such a nice mixture of tones and characters, too.
I'm glad you're having plenty of RL work, but I can't stop myself from hoping that there will be at least a little bit of time for fanfic, too. I'd love to see you in Beholder again and Minerva_fest, too, of course. I'll probably run it again (I'm keeping it as a sort of reward if I get enough sabbatical work done.)
