Last week or so I cleared out my handbag. There's lots of different sections in my bag, although it is a relatively small one, because I like to keep things orderly and separated. I hate rummaging around for hours. A place for everything and everything in its place - that's me.

Then I noticed a little section with a zipper that I normally never use. I looked there, too.

And I found a booktoken for 15 Euro.

Today I went to our local department store, and to reach the tights, you have to go through the book section and the shoes section. They're cruel, cunning, Slytherin marketeers at that store.

I did not buy the shoes. Looked great, but the heels just that little bit to high to work on a day of teaching.

In the book section, however, I saw the display (a very modest and easy-to-overlook one, btw) for JKR's A Casual Vacancy. There it was, in shiny hardback. Price 18,95 Euro.

Basically, that means it costs me 3,95, right?

So yes.

I did it.

Now I need to find a shop that does decent deals on time.

If you can get BBC2 where you are, today at 22:00 (British time) JKR will be interviewed about this book.

It was very interesting, to hear her. I'm not sure I want to read this book - I'm reading mainly to escape the ills of life, not to get a vivid reminder of them - but I do appreciate what propmted her to write it, and being so rich but still remembers the poor is vert rare in this economic climate. She made me believe that she really cares and wants society take more responsibility rather than blame the misfortunate of their own circumstances. She talks about sociel mobility and other really lefty stuff; very impressive. I thought she sold her soul to WB... Glad to hear that not so much.

it's on the bbc player until next thursday

Life can't suck all the time.

I look forward to your take on the book,

I must be totally out of touch -- I didn't even know Rowling had written a new book. You must tell us all about it! Would it be worth the full price?

I've no idea yet, but I'll leave you my considered opinion in due course. Vaysh has posted a link to an interview with JKR on the book. Long, but very readable. The interview, I mean.

I'm looking forwar do to your review!

Since you saved 15 Euro on the book, you could totally deduct that from your next purchase of shoes and save again! Just don't think about it for too long. Do it. Go buy shoes!

I'm trying to work out your bookkeeping ideas. I think I should just accept them.

But not those shoes. Not quite comfy enough.

Oh, you found an easter-egg in September :-)) Good for you! You can read it at the pool in Florida, if I am not mistaken...

If I can wait that long. Also, it's the hardback, so I will probably not drag it to the US.

But yes, two weeks from now today. Unbelievable.

Am looking forward to your views on how casual (or vacant) the book is.

Queenie is right -- the money you saved here can totally be devoted to shoes next time. Any shoes you purchase will be a bargain, because you were so frugal in only spending 4 euro for the book.

Apparently the book has "salty language" and deals with social ills. That's all I've gleaned so far from articles half-glimpsed as I faff about on the web.

Yay for finding unexpected booktokens! And for such a good use, too. I'm looking forward to your review/impression of it, since I managed to no longer have a SUB, but rather a BUB nowadays... (the terms come from some reading forum I don't participate {yet, because that would be fatal for my ..UB's}, but the terms are in wide use among my German acquaintances. Practically, they translate easily into English: stack of unread books, shelf of unread books (SUB), bookcase of unread books (BUB), up to RUB and HUB (room and house of unread... you get the picture.) I've made a bargain with myself only to buy a new one if I have read one from that shelf. Ahem.
