In just a few days, Beholder 2013 will start posting, and I can barely contain myself.

I've had a hellishly busy teaching week and this week will be a madhouse, too. Today I only have one lesson to give, so today is devoted to some small household tasks, over which I'm currently procrastinating.

The busy teaching didn't leave any time for fun events or post-worthy things, so to keep up the once-a-week posting rhythm, I've thought of a fun little meme. Recs of my all-time-favourite Beholder stories.

To limit myself, and to make it more fun, I've decided to do only one per author, only one per main character, and only those rare characters that are the joy and delight of [livejournal.com profile] hp_beholder, for what I love most about the fest is the way in which little-known, hardly-written characters are explored and turned into three-dimensional creations. So for this list I didn't even use our OLSB stalwarts, but those characters I really discovered through Beholder.

Alphabetically per author, for while the OCD in me craves some sort of order, the Libra makes 'preference' an impossibility.

Choosing the Wizard by [livejournal.com profile] albalark. Ollivander and Rubeus Hagrid - neither one gets much fic outside Beholder and Hoggywarty, and this is a beautiful exploration of their relationship and their characters.

The Conjugal State by [livejournal.com profile] atdelphi. A marvellous Filch-centered story in which he discovers a book on Marital Bliss and How to Achieve it.

An Interesting and Difficult Woman by [livejournal.com profile] featherxquill. Muriel Prewett (and Ollivander - where other than Beholder does one find two stories about him? But Muriel is the title, so I'm not cheating on my own rules.) This story sold me on dear Auntie Muriel.

Tryptich by [livejournal.com profile] kellychambliss. Eileen Prince, Tobias Snape, and Sybill Trelawney, and the whole story, especially Tobias's voice, is a masterpiece of characterization. Sybill is very much Sybill, but she doesn't find herself annoying, and in this story we see her as she sees herself. Superb.

A Fucking Marvelous Wolf by [livejournal.com profile] lash_larue. Fenrir Greyback. If I could name only one story that sums up Beholder for me, it would be this one. Lash manages to show us a Fenrir who is not prettified, but we do get to walk a mile in his shoes and see him in a different light ever after.

A Toast to Lord Voldemort by [livejournal.com profile] magnetic_pole. True, Minerva is hardly a rare character, and within the OLSB neither is Augusta. But this is simply one of my all-time favourites, so yes, now I do cheat. Gussie's comments on life, love, and famous men (not necessarily in that order) are a joy to read, and Minerva is worthy to be her partner.

Professor C. Binns: A Personal History by [livejournal.com profile] purplefluffycat. This is the canon story for Binns. Simply that. With a great Walburga Black as second character.

The Ladies of Godric's Hollow by [livejournal.com profile] tetleythesecond. Bathilda Bagshot/Griselda Marchbanks. It's a beautiful, unconventional love story and a fascinating piece of history as only Tetley can write it.

So, flist, what are your all-time favourites?
